Temba Bavuma has just made history as the first South African captain to lift the World Test Championship.

But did you know the international star is also working with Bat For A Chance in a bid to inspire a new generation of cricketers from South African townships like the one he grew up in.

The Temba Bavuma Foundation, founded in 2016 to help disadvantaged communities in South Africa through sport and education, has partnered with BFAC to deliver kit to children who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to play the sport we all love.

After BFAC founder Will Gaffney explained the work the charity does in collecting and sourcing clothing and equipment to underprivileged people around the world, Bavuma was immediately impressed.

“When I came to understand what Will does, I was fascinated by the work that they do in terms of giving access to underprivileged kids who don’t have access to cricket equipment, so they can live out their passion,” Bavuma told the BFAC podcast.

“Cricket is an expensive sport, especially the equipment, and not all of us have the resources to be able to fully partake in cricket.”

As part of the partnership, BFAC provided 12 complete cricket kit bags to the Gugulethu Cricket Club, based in a Cape Town township.

“It’s made things a lot easier for the club and brought a lot of new faces to the club,” added Bavuma.

“Seeing the reaction on the kids’ faces when they get a new bat or a new piece of equipment, you see a sense of hope and joy.

“You also get a strengthened sense of motivation for those boys and girls as well.

It really gives that feeling that someone is supporting them and the dream or ambition that they have.

“That’s what all of us really want. You want to feel like people believe in you.

“The work that Bat For A Chance do in terms of giving access to underprivileged people is what we need.

“I’m excited to be doing more stuff with Will, whether here in South Africa or in the UK.”
